Candidate Forums

NOTE: Due to Covid-19, and for the foreseeable future, all candidate forums will be recorded in closed session and made available for public viewing after the fact. Interested persons may contribute questions for the candidates via email until the day before the event.

LWV White Bear Lake Area-Sponsored Candidate Forums

The purpose of Candidate Forums is to give voters an opportunity to hear candidates discuss issues of importance to them in this election. All candidates are invited to answer questions from the public during these moderated events. Questions are accepted via email until the day before the event at lwvwbl@lwvmn.org. All forums will be recorded in closed session and made available for viewing on the White Bear Lake Area LWV YouTube Channel.

MN State House District 39A/B – LWV Candidate Forum for Minnesota House of Representatives Districts 39A and 39B, recorded on September 14, 2020, can be viewed HERE. Candidates Ann Mosley for District 39A and Shelly Christiansen and Joe Garafalo for District 39B respond to voter questions about their positions on the issues prior to the Nov. 3 election. Candidate Bob Dettmer declined LWV’s invitation to participate.

MN State Senate District 39 – LWV Candidate Forum for Minnesota Senate District 39, recorded on September 14, 2020, can be viewed HERE. Candidate Josiah Hill responds to voter questions about his view on the issues prior to the Nov. 3 election. Candidate Karin Housley declined LWV’s invitation to participate.

MN State House District 42A/B – LWV Candidate Forum for Minnesota House District 42 A and B, recorded on September 15, 2020, can be viewed HERE. Candidates for District 42A Jamie Becker-Finn and Sue Finney, and Candidate for District 42B Kelly Moller respond to voter questions about their positions on the issues prior to the Nov. 3 election. Candidate Candy Sina for District 42B declined LWV’s invitation to participate.

Stillwater Independent School District #834 Special Election – LWV candidate forum for the Stillwater Independent School District #834 School Board Special Election, recorded on September 17, 2020, can be viewed HERE. Candidates Tim Brewington, Joseph Ehrler, Bill Gilles, Beverly Petrie, Alison Sherman and Roger Zieman respond to voter questions about their positions on the issues prior to the Nov. 3 election.

Stillwater Independent School District #834 At-Large Election – LWV candidate forum for the Stillwater Independent School District #834 School Board At-Large election, recorded on September 17, 2020, can be viewed HERE. Candidates Dawn Bevers, Katie Hockert, Matt Onken, Annie Porbeni, Mike Ptacek and Sarah Stivland respond to voter questions about their positions on issues prior to the Nov. 3 election. Candidate Phillip St. Ores did not participate in the forum.

North Oaks Mayor – LWV candidate forum for the North Oaks Mayoral election, recorded on September 21, 2020, can be viewed HERE. Candidates Mark R Azman, Alex Legeros and Kara Ries, respond to voter questions about their positions on the issues prior to the Nov. 3 election.

North Oaks City Council At-Large Election – LWV candidate forum for the North Oaks City Council at-large election, recorded on September 22, 2020, can be viewed HERE. Candidates Rich Dujmovic, Rick Kingston, Sara Shah and Tom Watson, respond to voter questions about their positions on the issues prior to the Nov. 3 election.

North Oaks City Council Special Election – LWV candidate forum for the North Oaks City Council special election, recorded on September 22, 2020, can be viewed HERE. Candidates Jim Hara and Nick Sandell respond to voter questions about their positions on the issues prior to the election Nov. 3. Candidate Jason Triemert did not respond to LWV’s invitation.

Vadnais Heights City Council – LWV candidate forum for the Vadnais Heights City Council special election, recorded on September 23, 2020, can be viewed HERE. Candidates Erik Goebel, Bob Morse and Steve Rogers, respond to voter questions about their positions on the issues prior to the Nov. 3 election. Candidates David Dejarlais and Jason Jacobson did not respond to LWV’s invitation to participate. Aaron Rogers is no longer a candidate.

Shoreview City Council – LWV candidate forum for the Shoreview City Council election, recorded on September 23, 2020, can be viewed HERE. Candidates Sue Denkinger, Emy Johnson, Jillian McAdams, David Olson and Abraham Wolfe, respond to voter questions about their positions on the issues prior to the Nov. 3 election.

Lake Elmo Mayor – LWV candidate forum for the Lake Elmo Mayoral election, recorded on September 24, 2020, can be viewed HERE. Candidates for Lake Elmo Mayor, Justin Bloyer and Charles Cadenhead, respond to voter questions about their positions on the issues prior to the election on Nov. 3.

Lake Elmo City Council – LWV candidate forum for the Lake Elmo City Council election, recorded on September 24, 2020, can be viewed HERE. Candidates for Lake Elmo City Council, Katrina Beckstrom, Jeff Holtz and Matt Howe, respond to questions from voters about their positions on the issues prior to the election Nov. 3.

Oak Park Heights Mayor – The public is invited to submit questions in advance of a virtual candidate forum planned for the Oak Park Heights Mayoral election. So far, candidates Mary McComber and Mark Swenson have confirmed participation. All candidates were invited to participate. Interested persons should email questions for the candidates before Monday, September 28, to lwvwbl@lwvmn.org, with the candidate forum listed in the subject line.

Forest Lake City Council – The public is invited to submit questions in advance of a virtual candidate forum planned for the Forest Lake City Council election. So far, candidate Eric Michael Langness has confirmed participation. All candidates were invited to participate. Interested persons should email questions for the candidates before Monday, September 28, to lwvwbl@lwvmn.org, with the candidate forum listed in the subject line.

Mahtomedi School Board – The public is invited to submit questions in advance of a virtual candidate forum planned for the Mahtomedi School Board election. So far, candidates who have confirmed participation include Lucy L. Payne, Stacey Stout, Tony Vosooney, and Kelly Reagan. All candidates were invited to participate. Interested persons should email questions for the candidates before Thursday, October 1, to lwvwbl@lwvmn.org, with the candidate forum listed in the subject line.

MN State Senate District 38 – The public is invited to submit questions in advance of a virtual candidate forum planned for the Mahtomedi School Board election. Candidates Justin Stofferahn and Roger Chamberlain have confirmed participation. All candidates were invited to participate. Interested persons should email questions for the candidates before Thursday, October 1, to lwvwbl@lwvmn.org, with the candidate forum listed in the subject line.

Lake St. Croix Beach Mayor and City Council – The public is invited to submit questions in advance of a virtual candidate forum planned for the Lake St. Croix Beach Mayoral and City Council elections. So far, candidates who have confirmed participation include Dawn Bulera for Mayor and  Christopher Smith and Cindie J. Reiter for City Council. All candidates were invited to participate. Interested persons should email questions for the candidates before Monday, October 5, to lwvwbl@lwvmn.org, with the candidate forum listed in the subject line.

City of Grant Mayor and City Council – The public is invited to submit questions in advance of a virtual candidate forum planned for the City of Grant Mayoral and City Council elections. So far, candidates who have confirmed participation include Jeff Huber for Mayor and Jeff Schafer, Tom Carr, and Wayne Sarappo for City Council. All candidates were invited to participate. Interested persons should email questions for the candidates before Wednesday, October 7, to lwvwbl@lwvmn.org, with the candidate forum listed in the subject line.

LWV WBLA is nonpartisan in both our education and advocacy. We support the informed and active participation of citizens in government. We encourage our members to be informed participants in political activity. As a nonpartisan organization, we neither oppose nor support a political party or candidate even when the office is unaffiliated with a party. We take action on selected governmental issues only after study and consensus by our members. See full nonpartisan policy.
